TRADE OPENNESS AND UNEMPLOYMENT IN NIGERIA (1980-2023) - PROFESSOR OLOGUNDUDU M.M - Mountain Top University Economics August,2023. - 90p.

This study examines the relationship between trade openness and unemployment rate in Nigeria using the time series from 1980 to 2022. Specifically, it examines the impact of total exports on unemployment, investigates the impacts of total import on unemployment and also analyzes the effect of total trade on unemployment. The study utilized the auto-regressive distributed lag
(ARDL) technique. In order to explore the impact of trade openness and national unemployment rates, this study make use of some variables which include: population, per capita income, labour participation rate, inflation and exchange rate. These studies also show that all proxies of trade openness on unemployment are all significant. The implication of this result is that trade
openness provides employment opportunities, which reduces the unemployment rate in Nigeria. This study recommendation some polices Promoting the growth of export-oriented industries, promotion of labour market flexibility while safeguarding workers' rights can yield positive results as well, by encouraging industries that can capitalize on trade opportunities, finally,
government needs to explore new marketing areas for foreign investors which would also contribute to employment generation.
