Amelioration Of Cyclophosphamide Induced Biochemical Alterations In Male Wistar Rats Fed Lycopene Fortified And Ketogenic diet - Dr. O. T. Kayode - Mountain Top University BIOCHEMISTRY SCIENCES August,2023. - 109p.

Cyclophosphamide (CYC), a commonly used chemotherapeutic agent, often leads to unintended biochemical alterations and oxidative stress in various organs. This study aimed to investigate the potential ameliorative effects of a combination of lycopene supplementation and a ketogenic diet on CP-induced biochemical alterations in male Wistar rats.Male Wistar rats were divided into eight groups: Control (Standard diet), KD group (Ketogenic diet group), LYC group(Lycopene group), BHB group, CYC + KD, CYC + LYC and CYC + BHB. The CP-treated group received a single intraperitoneal injection of cyclophosphamide (200 mg/kg body weight). Rats were sacrificed on the 35th day of the treatment, Liver and kidney function parameters using standard procedures.
The results demonstrated that CYC administration led to a significant elevation (P<0.05) in liver function Parameters (AST, ALT and ALP) also there is a significant reduction (P<0.05) in albumin, globulin and total protein, in kidney function parameters (urea creatinine, sodium, chloride) there is a significant increase (P<0.05) in CYC administration and a significant decrease (P<0.05) in potassium. However, rats supplemented with lycopene did not show a significant (P>0.05) protective effects while ketogenic diet exhibited a significant (P<0.05) noticeable attenuation of these CYC-induced biochemical alterations and which is better
compared to the lycopene groups. In conclusion, this study highlights the potential of ketogenic diet to ameliorate CYC-induced
biochemical alterations in male Wistar rats. The ketogenic diet demonstrated protective effects on liver and kidney function. Further research is required to elucidate the underlying molecular mechanisms and to translate these findings into potential strategies for improving the management of chemotherapy-induced side effect. Keywords; cyclophosphamide, Ketogenic diet, Kidney function indices, Lycopene, Liver function indices and Male wistar rats.
