Summary, etc Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune condition marked by joint inflammation, oxidative stress as well as other systemic effects on organs such as the spleen This study investigates theprotective effect of the aqueous and ethanol root extracts of Alafia barteri on the spleen of formaldehyde-induced arthritic mice. Forty-five adult male and female mice (20-30g) were divided into nine (9) treatment groups: non-arthritic control, arthritic control, varying doses of aqueous and ethanol Alafia barteri extracts (100mg/kg, 200mg/kg, 400mg/kg), and diclofenac. Treatments were administered orally for 14 days post-arthritis induction. Mice spleen were<br/>examined for oxidative stress markers and interleukin beta (IL-1β). Compared to arthritic control group, specific Alafia barteri extract doses yielded significant body weight improvements. Lower doses showed minimal spleen index impact. Reduced glutathione (GSH) activity increased with no statistical significance. Catalase activity increased significantly, along with diclofenac (standard drug). The extract induced dose-dependent rise in superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, peaking at 400mg/kg. Notably, Alafia barteri extract countered formaldehydeinduced antioxidant disruptions on the spleen, showcasing its protective potential. In conclusion, Alafia barteri extract holds promise in safeguarding spleen health in formaldehyde-induced arthritic mice, shedding light on potential RA management strategies.
