Lead poisoning is a significant public health concern characterized by the accumulation of toxic lead levels in the body, resulting in various adverse health effects. Lead exposure is known to induce oxidative stress and disrupt the antioxidant defense mechanisms, potentially leading to organ damage. This study seeks to investigate the potential protective effects of Talinum
triangulare aqueous extract on the liver’s antioxidant levels and the histopathology of testes in rats exposed to Lead (Pb). Liver antioxidant parameters, including enzymes such as superoxide dismutase, catalase and lipid peroxidase, will be investigated to determine the antioxidant effect of the Talinum triangulare extract, histopathological examinations of testicular tissues will be
conducted to evaluate any protective effect against lead-induced testicular damage. Twenty-eight male rats were used in this study. The rats were grouped into four with seven rats each. Group A was the control group, receiving only the standard rat chow. Group B served as the Lead-induced group and received only 2.5 mg/mL Lead acetate. Group C and D received different doses of T.
triangulare aqueous extract: 200 mg/kg and 400 mg/kg respectively based on their average body weight. Oral administration was done daily for 21days. The rats were sacrificed under anesthesia, and the liver and testes were collected to determine the antioxidant levels and testicular histopathology. The results of this study highlight the potential of Talinum triangulare aqueous extract as a protective agent against lead-induced oxidative stress and tissue damage in the liver and testes.
Further studies should be conducted to investigate the specific pathways through which Talinum triangulare extract influences antioxidant enzymes and mitigates testicular histopathological alterations.
