ABSTRACT
This study examined the Public Perception of social media use for Public Relations Practice in
Nigeria; A study of MTN users in Mountain Top University. The aim of the study was to
determine the extent to which MTN users in Mountain Top University use social media and if
social media help them in their relationship with the telecommunication company (MTN). It
also examines if MTN social media post is informative to their customer. This study sought to
find out if the Public Relations content put out on social media help influence MTN customer
purchase decision. In line with the objectives of this research, the instrument of data collection
used was the structured questionnaire, distributed to a sample size of 303 out of the 1,265
students of the school. The data gathered was thereafter analysed, presented and interpreted
using the descriptive data analysis technique; by presenting the data in table, frequencies,
percentages, and narratives. The findings of the study revealed that MTN Telecommunication
Company is a very popular company among people. The research also made it known that
WhatsApp, which is an online messaging platform, is preferred among the respondents as their
preferred social media platforms. The researcher was able to probe further to discover that
respondents often know about MTN programs through their social media uploads. They also
find the social media content on MTN social media page to be very relevant to the information
they need, such as social bundles, data plans, special packages, this study recommends that
MTN should widen their horizon on their social media content in other to reach a larger
audience. Also the PR team of MTN should also create a feedback system which will enable
customers to rate their service experience and also enables customer to give or contribute ideas.
And with this a mutual relationship can exist between MTN and their customer through Public
Relations post and contents.
