By: OLATUNDE, OLUWATOMISIN. GMaterial type: TextTextPublisher: Mountain Top University Biological Science 2022Edition: DR. E.O. OYEBANJIDescription: iv';23pSubject(s): MicrobiologySummary: Medicinal plants produce compounds that can be used as therapeutics or as precursors to theproduction of useful drugs. They may be a source of raw materials for the pharmaceuticalindustry. Costus spicatus is a Costaceae plant that is native to Brazil. It has antimicrobial, antifungal, antioxidant, and antidiabetic function, among other pharmacological and therapeuticproperties. Because of this, the leaves of Costus spicatus were examined for preliminaryphytochemical studies to see whether phytoconstituents including alkaloids, flavonoids, steroidalcompounds, saponins, tannins, phenols, and cardiac glycosides were present. The aqueous extract was extracted and the presence of phytochemicals was tested in this sample. The findingsrevealed that the extract contains active bioactive ingredients.
