520 _aThis subject matter of this research work is to compare undergraduate social media and traditional media usage habits. The main objective of this research work was to find out the positive and negative effects of undergraduate's social media and traditional media usage habits. The theory used to further aid understanding of this project was the uses and gratification theory and the student involvement theory. The design used for the study is a descriptive survey method. It relies on structures questionnaire as an instrument of data collection. Four research questions were formulated to guide the study, from which the questionnaire was designed. 100 questionnaires were administered. From the analysed data, the researcher concluded that social media networks play vital role on the academic performance of tertiary institutions students in southwest Universities. Though the students are often chatting with their peers. friends, and course mates online on issues that are related to their academic and that negatively influence their inability of attaining their set goals.
