520 _aABSTRACT The species Costus spicatus Jacq. (Spiked spiral flag ginger) is a medicinal plant considered to be 'cana-do-brejo' is native to Caribbean regions and mostly grown as a decorative and medicinal herb primarily used for the treatment of diuretic, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, anthelmintic, stimulant and tumor. The objective of the proximate analysis was to determine in standard methods the nutrient values for protein, moisture, ash and crude fiber in the aquatic extract of the plant. The plant's leaf and floral sections contain various nutritional factors. These indicates that these parts of the specie contain appreciable amount of nutrients which might be included in our diets to supplement our daily nutrients need.
